    Google Chrome OS

Google is apparently developing an OS for netbooks and desktops. The objective seems to be to replace MS Windows and create the ideal environment for web apps.

TBH - I think it's good. It will presumably be a customised Linux build aimed at integrating all the Google applications from the net.

I don't see it as competition to Micro$oft - their mobile/PDA OS never really cut it anyway, but it will certainly create inroads into online apps, data access and storage.

            Google OS.

If it's based on Linux, I hope they make it esier to setup than the last time I tried to install Linux.
Competition between OS types can only be good I think.

It certainly looks like an interesting concept. I suspect it's going to be ideal for netbooks but whether it will be any good for desktops is another matter.

I guess the big question is how many people need a proper desktop PC. Clearly, people who work with software will need one, but how many others need one for a home PC? I was trying to think of important apps that I need for the home PC (non-work related) and the only real ones I can think of are a) Photo/video processing and b) games (for my son).

I kind of wonder if we'll all end up with several PCs in the house for different uses. Wireless netbooks for general use and maybe 1 desktop for serious photo editing and game playing. Probably only 1 desktop (if any) for every 2-3 netbooks. This is the way we are in my house already.

That has to be standard competitive strategy though. You can't leave your enemy with a strong base otherwise you can never beat them.

So Microsoft has to attack Google on search, Google has to attack Microsoft on OS and apps.

Saw an article today that indicates it will be pre-installed on some "netbook" computers---marketing ploy here call it a "Google Chrome netbook", give it a flash chrome finish with the Google logo on the lid.

I doubt if you'd sell many with a chrome finish, Chrome was soooo 60s / 70s.

These days it would have to be satin nickel or brushed aluminium.
