I assume that the ban on Microsoft and XML only applies to the US then?
In a separate injunction, the court prohibited Microsoft from "selling, offering to sell, and/or importing in or into the United States" any version of the software that can open custom XML files (with file extensions .xml, .docx, or .docm).
I can make an xml file myself in notepad and I don't think I would be infringing any patents in doing so.
I think the emphasis may be on what is considered 'custom'. I read the court ruling to mean for example Word files saved as xml (docx) for portability.
As you say it does also appear to be related only to the US. Better download the XML editor whilst it's still available, maybe it will be removed.
