Apple Mac / Actinic / Dreamweaver

I've finally had enough of the trials and tribulations of dealing with Windows issues and I'm pretty much sold on moving to a MacBook Pro.

I've got MS Office and Adobe CS3 which I plan to swap to Mac versions.

This just leaves the problem of Actinic - or, rather, the way in which Actinic will interact with Dreamweaver when Dreamweaver is a Mac version.

Has anyone got any experience of doing this? Is it possible? Will I still be able to register designs in Actinic from Dreamweaver? Or should I also run Dreamweaver under Parallels or VMWare?

    thanks

      Andy,

I've been running Actinic Business V9.0.5 on a MacBookPro since October 2009 under Parallels V5 having started with V4. Guest O/S used is XP SP2. Though I do not use Dreamweaver, I have Sage Line 50 & Windows Office 2003 running & can interchange data between the two O/S quite easily.

      Couple of things to note:

      1. Parallels V5 includes a new feature called Crystal mode allowing you to dock your Windows applications just like other Mac Applications. Coherence mode allows you to run Windows apps like native MAC apps. I.e. you can't tell you are running Windows as it blends in well with Mac apps.
      2. Found Actinic running much faster on the MacBookPro than my Dell Server although my Dell is of higher spec.
      3. Not much difference between VMWare & Parallels. Each overtake one another with every new release. Believe featurewise & stabilitywise, both are the same.
      4. Bought MS Office 2008 for Mac hoping it will be much better than MS Offfice 2003 for windows. Wrong - Mac version has too many limitations since it can't run VB scripts. My usage of pivot tables is heavy & these got screwed up, so had to revert back & install MSOffice 2003 under Parallels.

Overall, moving to MAC was the best move I made in 25+ years in IT and regret not doing it sooner. Its a shame that no MAC versions are available for Actinic & Sage, otherwise I would have dumped Windows altogether.

        Thanks for the replies guys.

I've looked at all the other posts about running Actinic on a Mac and that is what sold me to the idea. The only bit I didn't see on any of those posts was how DW and Actinic interact if you have the Mac version of DW.

I think I'm just going to go ahead with it and work it out afterwards. It won't be a show stopper if I couldn't figure it out - just mildly inconvenient and I'd find someway round it.

        thanks

We thought about going Mac a few months ago but gave up when we realised that we would have to run virtually everything under something like Parallels which seemed to defeat the object. Silly question probably, but have you tried windows 7 on a new PC, it's very very good IMO.

              Question about Parallels (or VMWare).....

              Can 8.5.2, 8.5.3, 9.03 and 9.05 all co-exist on a Mac?

One version of each of V8 and v9 can coexist in the same VM but the subversions would need a different VM - same as in windows.

I have had some recent problems with my server which initially looked like my PC so I went to get a new one. Whilst I was in the showroom I was given a demonstration of a mac around £1000 that was basically a monitor, small keyboard and mouse that's it.

The tools on the screen whipped round and opened 30 programs simultaneously without a hitch. Two programmers did some work with the PC guy complied in 30 minutes the MAC guy had his done in 8 with a hot coffee in hand.

I am looking now to convert to mac with my adobe CS and want to run actinic on there. Some customers have said that windows 7 runs better on a mac that it does on a pc.

i have on a iMac running parallels ( the latest version) and windows 7 in a bootcamp. I tell you it is a disaster .sage and actinic are running very bad and block a lot. now even my windows is telling me it is not original any more.
I love apple but i hope sage and actinic make also a apple version.

I would change to a Mac tomorrow if Actinic was available. It is only Actinic holding me back.

                          Hi Microbattery.

Not sure what actual issues you're facing.
However, I've got Actinic V10 & Sage L50 V2010 running on Win Xp via Parallels V5 on a macbook pro. Was struggling when I had 4Gb memory installed with 1Gb allocated to Parallels. Took memory to max of 8Gb with 3Gb dedicated to Parallels. There has been some improvement but not at good at a stand alone PC. When attaching an external file for stock control, Actinic totally hangs.

So even for us, its only Sage & Actinic that is holding us back in order to ditch windows altogether. Will upgrade to V11 before I decide to look at alternatives for both Actinic & Sage.
