what a weird evening, (hopefully, this may help someone) I've just been called back to work with the lads complaining of a siren going off, and I remotely diagnosed it as the "CPU overheating alarm" - told the lads I'll be in, and I'll replace the fans.
anyway, replaced the CPU fan - same noise, replaced the chassis fan, same noise, replaced them both again (faulty replacement fans? - you never know) same noise
eachtime, I put the machine under stress to heat up the CPU and used lots of multiple tabs, downloading, still the same old siren.
next thought - virus - bugg*r - lots of checking, nada !
anyway, eventually thought "I'll mute the speakers" - sound goes away, must be a software sound rather than system sound
so, me thinks, "Try disabling addins inside firefox" (all of them) - sound goes away, re-enable addins one by one and hey presto, solved it !
anyway, it seems that CoolIris is the culprit (that and google believe it or not)
Google's logo today (21 may 2010) celebrates the 30th anniversary of PacMan - this new logo from google AND coolIris addin for firefox combination makes the firefox suddenly start playing the pacman introduction music all the time.
there's two solutions,
for the latest on this really crazy bug, just go to http://blog.cooliris.com/2010/05/21/...-pacman-music/
as a side note, take a quick look at google's home page logo, boy does that take me back
so, I just spent nearly three hours travelling, replacing multiple fans, tracking down a potential virus, playing the hunt the add-in game, solved a problem, but would much preferred to have spent three hours playing the original pacman game, than just listening to those sounds.
