anyone help me out with a formula? using excel

I want to say if the value of cell a2 > cell a1 display cell a2 in red. then I want to say if a3 > a1 display a3 in red, and so on acroos the row and then row b,c ,d etc

I know I can do this with conditional formatting, but to do that means doing the format for every cell. I've got 100s of cells

Is there a neater way?

Highlight the cells you want to compare with column A, Go to conditional formatting, click on the argument and then click on cell A1 - Remove the $ sign in front of the 1 so that it reads $A1 format for red text then click on OK and you should have it working
