New Laptop - which operating system?

We're looking to purchase a new laptop to run Sellerdeck 2013 and over the past few months various issues have been highlighted with different operating systems and some previous posts are now out of date I guess.

So if we were to purchase a Laptop to run Sellerdeck 2013 today, what would be the operating system of choice?

Win7 Pro for me.

I have XP, Win7 and Win8 machines and Win7 seems overall to be the most stable and easiest to operate - being the old curmudgeon that I am.

Finally getting somewhere....

Any opinions on if something with the following spec be suitable for multi-tasking and running Sellerdeck V9, V11 and 2013 ie having all three open at the same time?

Processor - B830 Intel Celeron B830 - 1.8 GHz
RAM - 8GB
Hard Drive - 750 GB
Operating System - Windows 8 (64-Bit)

I tried to have a bit of a read-up on things and it looks like the 8GB RAM would be sufficient but concerned about the processor. I appreciate that pc forums may have advice but i'm specifically looking for feedback from Sellerdeck users using multiple versions of Sellerdeck at the same time.

Any thoughts?

Indeed i would be concerned with the processor. however a few thing should be noted.

- what other programs will you be running along side the 3 versions of sellerdeck?

- how large are the sites on each of the versions?


The Ram is sufficient, but this does depend upon the size of the sites, the same can be said for the processor, but also what other programs will be running. I would try to look at a Pentium or if budget allows a i3 or better, i currently have a duel-core Pentium e6500 @ 3.00ghz which doesn't break much of a sweat running 3 versions of sellerdeck ( the sites that i run range from medium to large), my Ram however i could do with having much more ( only having 3gb)

Multiple version of Sellerdeck aren't going to be pushing the processor much. It's not as if they're very processor intensive applications.

I would put the extra money into a SSD hard drive though. The benefit will be faster access to the database, even though 8GB of RAM should give you plenty of room for the database to be cached.

Indeed. A Celeron processor is really showing its age and would look at a dual core for not much money. If you have other applications running or want to use the machine for fun in your "spare time" (haha) the better processor will stand you in better position.

Funnily enough the old laptop I bought off your Peter about 6 years back was a Celeron and he wanted shot as it was tired then - shorty used it for general internet and school work (until he killed it last year)

You have to be careful about judging the processor on name alone. Intel uses the name 'celeron' for stripped down versions of their processors as a way to address the budget market.

The Celeron B830 is dual core and is just a stripped down sandy-bridge processor (so the previous version of I3, i5, i7, etc which are now ivy-bridge).

Performance wise, it's very similar to a Pentium E5200 (2.55Ghz) or a Core2 Duo E6550 (2.33GHz).

On the whole though, I probably agree with the others. Laptops as a whole tend to run slower and with less oomph than a desktop because everything has been optimised for the absolute minimum power consumption.

I still have an Acer laptop based on a Core 2 duo T5200 which is insanely slow. The benchmarks say the Celeron B830 is twice as fast, but I'd still say that's not enough. Especially if you want to do anything serious on it.

Sorry, yes - I tend to refer to the full biff big brother dual cores as dual core and Celeron for anything that is the baby brother cut-down version regardless of size, power and processors it has.

A simple classification for my own mind for a bewildering array of processor choices. I live a simple life in a complex world.

Ok, this all clarifies that I haven't a clue what i'm doing

I have narrowed it down to these two Toshiba Satellites, only £20 in it....your votes please:

A.) AMD A6 quad core processor.
2GHz processor speed.
6GB RAM.
750GB SATA hard drive.
Microsoft Windows 8

B.) Intel Pentium 2020M dual core processor.
2.4GHz processor speed.
8GB RAM.
1000GB hard drive.
Microsoft Windows 8

Only using for email and various Sellerdeck sites covering all versions plus photoshop. Always have everything open at once along with a browser.

Thanks Norman, Sellerdeck support confirmed the v11.0.5 and upwards compatible with Windows 8.1 yesterday afternoon

It was the best £50.00 I have spent in a long time - it is now being used as a paperweight on top of his extensive Dr Who magazine collection.

Back to the plot - my instincts would be version B as well

Between them I'd have to go B as well but neither is a real speed demon.

The pentium 2020M is rated about 50% faster than the Celeron B830 but's still something like 3x slower than the mid-range i5 3450 that my desktop has.

If the laptop is going to be your main PC for the next 2-3 years it might be worth thinking of something a bit faster.
