Actinic Auto Backup/Restore via FTP

Hi,

Would it be possible for actinic to make a backup of itself and upload it to an FTP server (doesnt have to be the same as the site). This would be zipped/passworded file that includes images, database etc and anything that isnt supplied when you install actinic.

If this could be done in a full backup and then incremental it wouldnt be that bad on the bandwidth.

I am trying to find a reasonable 3rd party package to do this for me if anyone has any suggestions.

Winzip 11 can be configured to do this for you - that is, zip the entire site folder on schedule and upload to your FTP location. It would not cope well with a non-standard site where bits are kept in DreamWobblers data file and other bits in My Documents/My Photos/My Web Photos from Tuesday etc, but a standard site where everything needed for the site is inside the Actinic site folder - no problem.

Jan at Mole-end has got a freebie (I think) that backups up the database, you can specify an FTP location for backup

I remember we looked at this a few years ago, but then we got into difficulties with how you stop anyone being able to download the file and issues around that. It's probably about time we looked at it again though.

you should be able to direct a backup to an upper level of the ftp space, this tends to be outside the area a stray browser can go

I dont like the idea of backing up the database and ftping it anywhere. too much customer data in that file for me too load it to the server through Actinic. Your just asking for trouble IMHO.

We suggest that our cleint employ a remote backup system which automatically logs into your computer after hours, reviews the specified folders for changes and then backs the data up to a secure remote data center. You can set Actinic up to do a backup when closed and simply set the remote backup to archive /site1/ and /sitebackups/. they offer a thirty day trial and they configure everything for you. There are loads of other providers as well, defintly worth a look. It totally sucks when your hard drive crashes and your left with nothing.

Its costly, but to be honest something like Acronis Disk Director is a good product. Not thinking only about Actinic, but with it you can schedule to backup an entire hard disk or specified subfolders to a seperate drive whenever you want. Much easier and more secure than FTPing everywhere, and it won't fail if my net connection is down.

Saying that, I don't have the money for Acronis, so I'm going to use good old DOS to copy my folders for me and run it every night with Task Scheduler

Maybe actinic could setup a opensource secure dispersed storage grid and then either as part of the deal when you buy or with a small monthly/yearly fee allow us to backup our data or if we want, store it on our own server. I know I would pay a small amount to keep secure backups with actinic.
