    I wish....

....for a sales report by content category. Prime example being a site i run, it has 4 main areas of business - cars, helicopters, planes and boats. If i created content categories for each of these areas, plus a miscellaneous category, i could then include all products into the correct category and see at a glance, sales in these areas. This would be a great report and show you at a glance the business areas where you are making sales.

This approach could be adopted across many different businesses and Jont could also use it by creating a 'get rid of the crap' category, directly linked to his best sellers list.

    Thank you tooth fairy....

What is a content category Lee - would it be a user defined property? How would you want to deal with special offers and adjustments?

    I might write a report a bit like this - it's a good idea.

      Hi Jan

I say content category as these are available already in actinic and i think they could be expanded upon. It's the drop down box just below the thumbnail option on a product. I know very little about them at the moment, but from what i gather so far, you set up the categories and then apply each product to one of those categories.

If a report could then run with a category filter which gave all sales in a group broken down into something like:

      Number of Orders
      Total Takings
      Average Transaction Amount
      % of Total Website Sales

      that would be handy.

Sometimes it's nice to drill down a bit deeper than on product sales alone, this would be a great feature and would help many people to see the strengths and weaknesses of their website.

PS - personally i would just run it on total sales amount and not get too in depth on the breakdowns. Other people would need to add their tuppence worth to see what would be best for everyone.

When i first saw content categories, this is what i thought they were for, they appear to be for the site layouts, although i must admit, i know jack in this area. Anyone used these to any effect yet and what did you do with them?

I've played with them (and then removed the concept from my site)

you create a variable "Author" and give it a catagory of "books", another variable of "Artist" and give that a catagory of "CD"

and then when the product is being added, you change the catagory and only applicable variables (Author / Artist) are shown (and prompted for)

When you have a bug in v8 and you suddenly start getting 10 versions of "standard category" - then the theory falls down big time, I've never been brave enough to delete the wrong nine versions of "standard category"

(I might not have explained that brilliantly, but you get the idea)

Ah, got it - much easier than variables then because you can only define them on the products (ie: the evil use parent doesn't exist for them). I'll have a ponder on this then.

          Cheers,

A vote for me on this one, i created 2 variables and nodoubt will create more, but these are also set to use at parent level. but most is defined directly with the product

These 2 variables are basicaly type of kite, and manufacturer, i use these for my mash feeds for google

now if i could use this in a report to check sales against manufacturers then this could be useful even better if the data could be extracted as a csv
