    Test Mode

My suggestion would be while the site is in test model, there is a met tag in the html that stops search engines crawling the test site, or reduces the change of them following the test site.

For short periods of development, small chance to be found, if a site is being developed over months you do not want it to aim in search engine results.

Useful to have a banner or a text message saying it is a test site, have a look around but go to www.example.com to order.

No doubt these have been mentioned before. Just a thought.

Good point and as a work around it may be worthwhile having an appropriate robots.txt file in the root to block the test directory.

Yes this is a good idea, but it is possible to prevent spiders visiting a test site by using robots.txt file.

      there is info here

      http://www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html

just create a disallow for acatalog/test this can permanantly remain in place.

i'd always go down the robots route as you can then add other folders in your webspace that you want to keep private. And point spiders to the pages you want indexed.

Item 26 on the V9.0.4 list

26.Pages generated in test mode will no longer be indexed by search engine spiders. AC9-2260
It sounds like it does what you want.
