When I attempt to start a program, I receive the following error message: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

This can happen when a Windows file called Mfc42.dll becomes corrupted.
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of the Mfc42.dll file from your original Windows 98 CD-ROM into the WindowsSystem folder using the System File Checker tool.
To start the System File Checker tool, click Start, click Run, type sfc.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
