    Windows 7 faster working

I have V9 business plus with one additional user on another PC.

Both PC are 250GB with 2Gig of RAM on windows XP. My site has around 1300 products

Changing products and logging on is very Very slow particularly the additional PC linked by a 3 meter ethernet cable.

If I changed my PC to a new Windows7, Intel® Core™ i7 Processor, 8Gig of RAM and 1000GB will it be any quicker. Also will the additional user be any faster using the old Computer or am I wasting my money.

    Thank you

    Richard

If you going for 8gb ram then it will be a 64bit system, i am currently running v10.0.1 on an i5 64 bit system and it performs well, i dont use multi user but this system is alot faster than the vista system i migrated it from.

A higher spec system will always show improvements, the question is are they enough for you?

Actinic is a 32bit program so I doubt 8gb RAM will help much more than having 4gb. That said I find Actinic faster on W7 than on XP with the same 32bit hardware.

Though I cannot answer the OP question I would politely suggest that as it concerns Business Plus, this thread should be on the 'Multi-User' part of the forum.

I believe that this issue is a bone of contention that many of us have had to learn to live with - so don't get me started.

Thank you for your help. As I suspected the multi user system is not what it claims to be ie easy for more than one person to to work on the site. I have been with Actinic since V3 but it now seem to be slightly out dated in some areas. I guess I am going to have to look at what else is out there to run my shop ie dynamic database with Content Management Systems.

I am about to go through this desicion process this weekend, and I still hav't quite decided which way to go.

there is quite a bit to consider here,
Here are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7:
            • Starter: 8GB
            • Home Basic: 8GB
            • Home Premium: 16GB
            • Professional: 192GB
            • Enterprise: 192GB
            • Ultimate: 192GB

one important thing to consider, 32bit programmes (including actinic) can only use a maximum of about 2gb of memory for itself, if you have 3.37gb, this would mean (in theory) that 2gb for actinic and the remaining 1.37 for windows

having lots and lots of memory doesn't mean that windows is going to use it all.
Its going to be a combination of
            • speed of the hard disk access
            • the ability for the processor to "number crunch"
            • the ability to keep as much information in memory before having to go back to the hard disk
that determines whether your system is "percievd" as being faster.
take a look at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php to find the performance of any CPU, and consider others using this chart as a "relative speed comparrison", but remember its not the whole story.

I'm running W7 64-bit with an i5 and installing v10. It's a brand new machine, fresh install of actinic, but the database compact facility will not work, keeps coming up with the attached error message. Everything is a clean install on a fresh machine and i've also tried turning off UAC but no joy.

Office 2010 is the only other thing in the mix, could that create this DSN error message, anyone running Office 2010?

Strangely enough v9 does compact database without problem, just installed that and although it seemed incapable of seeing the example site for a few minutes and kept firing an error message, it suddenly managed to find it without me having done anything and now seems fine.

Something amiss with both versions of actinic and W7 and more importantly w7 and v10.

I have W7 32bit running with different versions of Actinic without a problem so I can only assume it might be related to the 64bit version.

Looks like an actinic problem to me, if you reinstall v10, it will let you compact the database the first time you go to do it. The next time you open it up, it goes through an upgrade process and then once complete, it will not compact the database from that point on. V9 does not suffer from this behaviour, so the older of the 2 softwares works fine, isn't it supposed to be the other way round?
