Error when entering a product in sales screen

When I enter the product code into the "Scan Items" field on pressing enter (or after scanning the bar code) I am getting the following message:

Error adding transaction detail The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.

I can scan some items and they work fine. Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

Product codes on the problem items possibly longer that the ones that work? Maybe a database field limit and you've exceeded it.

The product code is only 5 characters long. Others that are longer work OK - can you think of anything else I could check?

Sorry dude, i know jack on EPOS, i was just throwing in a possibility from other areas where this kind of thing happens, namely Sage & Quickbooks. Last throw of the dice (for me anyway) is product duplicates by any chance?

I am sorry to say no. Thanks for you quick reply - hopefully someone can shed some light on it soon.

Is there a minimum length requirement?

I have some with only four and they also work. Only seems to be this specific item - although I can see nothing that would make it different

                Hi Mark

Maybe something else that is causing the problem, can you check the length of the "Category" fields of these products. Category fields having long names are known to cause this problem

                Kind Regards

That is what is causing it - do you know what the maximum field length is?

Mark, it's 50 characters or less. If possible reset them and hopefully that will work.

                    Cheers
