Creating barcodes todo certain tasks / macros??

In a previous epos system I've used i managed to create barcodes i could scan todo basic tasks or macros

For example, i want to scan a barcode which will automatically give 10% discount to all items in a transaction.

Does any one know if its possible to access menus in the sales screen by typing text in the product code box.

I hope I've not confused anyone with this tread.
