Display shipping costs in basket

Hi all,

I have searched the forums and only found an old thread relating to V7

I would like to display shipping costs in the basket, yesterday this appeared to work for a while but today its not working ?

As far as I know shipping costs are normally only displayed in the basket if you use simple shipping (so sellerdeck can correctly display the shipping without having to do any zone or class calculations) or you set it to 'request location early*' (in which case it will ask for the information it needs to calculate the correct shipping).

* For this to work you might need to use 'Quantity on Confirmation Page' for the cart setting.

PS. Once you / the customer has been through the checkout the sellerdeck cookie will remember the zone & shipping class settings so you can sometimes see shipping displayed in the cart even if 'request location early' isn't set.

The above is clearly what I saw yesterday.

Ok, I have tried simple shipping, it did not work.

I cannot use "quantity on confirmation page" as I need quantities on the product pages.
I cannot seem to find 'request location early" ?

Apologies, its there but greyed out.

Great, ive just read that none of this will work unless quantity is on cart. So all of my customers will have to go and complete checkout to see shipping. !

Really hoping someone pops into this thread with a fix, surely it should be a basic feature of the software to show shipping costs in the basket ? Even with quantities set to product pages

My competitors show shipping in basket, I have to do the same. I can see many customers just clicking away from my site and going elsewhere.

Only way round this is to show shipping costs on all product pages, telling the customer the weight of 1 item and politely asking them to use a calculator............then write that down on a notepad then go to the next item they want and tally up !

Is there any workaround or 3rd party plugin for this ?
This might be the final straw for me with this software.

What customers usually want is to a simple and easy to understand shipping structure which they will typically look for as soon as they decide you have something that looks interesting.

I display the UK shipping costs against every product on the product page. It's easy to do with weight based shipping and is much better than making a customer add to the cart before they can see what the shipping is.

Im going to do what you have done, great site by the way, and start using both sidebars in shop and have shipping costs on right hand side.

I have now done this, with a small shipping table in the right sidebar and a shipping info page but, I really do not like this - every single one of my competitors show full shipping options in the basket.

Selling on the web is all about 'keeping up with your competitors'.

Am I right in saying that a plugin for this would be impossible to build ?
It wouldn't bother me to have to re-enter all the product weights and shipping options into a plugin.

A plug in could read the shipping data from the database and it could then be displayed on the pages, no need to re-enter the data as it can be accessed in the same way.

I am having the same problem with a site using simple shipping which displayed the cost in the cart ok until recently.

The actual shipping cost is included in the cart total but the shipping line does not appear, which is confusing for the customer.

I checked one of my test sites and the shipping displayed ok initially but on a second attempt same problem occurs.

I have tried on several browsers devices and same problem occurs so will be investigating cookie settings, firewall etc

I will update if I find aything and if anyone else has similar problems I would appreciate comments.

I posted this in the wish list, as its been on my wish list for years.

I had this reply:

"I looked at this a while ago but didn't follow it through. If you have a cookie with the shipping country set up the shipping costs are displayed. all you need to do is create a cookie if there isn't one already there. I think "

Can anyone elaborate ?

Does anyone know if SD plan to implement this much needed update ?
I just emailed support but was politely reminded I don't have a support contract.
