Recommendations for upgrade and fixes

Hi,
I am a bit unsure where to go - cloud / magent-o or upgrade from 2014 to 2016 but with some url fixes such as acatalog removal.

Any advice appreciated, seen rankings drop over the years, especially since going to 2014 oddly, could be many factors but I would like to move forward.

If I stay put I want a shorter checkout process - a whole page for agreeing terms is ludicrous and a better chance of improved SEO.

My big worry at present just changing from V12 to V16 is that I don't think attributes is the way forward with things like google shopping as in clothing for one I think they will be looking for single product for each colour and size combination.

Some of my products like one of our Polo shirts come in 50 colours and 7 sizes making a combination of 350 separate options to one product
