http and https on two different servers

Due to Google shopping's insistence. I have got to move my checkout on to a SLL server. I am very concerned about the possible negative effects of moving the entire site as we are a seasonal business and a significant reduction in our overall Google natural listings could be very damaging. I am therefore trying to implement an installation that leaves the main site on its current http server but has the checkout located on a separate SSL server. The SSL server is set up but I'm just can't get the correct network settings sorted out. Selledeck support has suggested that although the software offers this installation type, it doesn't actually work due to an old bug. Has anyone successfully setup Sellerdeck in this way? If so, could you point me in the direction of a forum post or installation guide which can help.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer

    Toby

    Hi Toby,

Sorry I can't help with having two separate servers but would it not be easier to setup an SSL certificate for the one server and just run everything on that.

You can easily keep the rest of the pages off SSL until your ready to promote them on https.

      Hi Mike,

That's the solution I'm looking at, but its annoying the 2 separate server option is built in but doesn't seem to work

I wouldn't let it get to you. The two server option will be a left over from the very early days when SSL was complicated and I have to say I can't see anything to say in favour of doing it that way, never mind the extra complications and issues that are going to arise.

We moved 4 sites over to full https 6 months ago and didn't suffer any ill effect, in fact I would say our rankings slightly improved.

I have noticed that Firefox is starting to report some sites as a risk for not being https which will have a negative effect on http sites.

I think the only way to go is full https on every page of your website.

            Hi Buzby,

What steps did you go through to achieve your move? We need to do it but concerned by the process involved.

            Thanks for your time Mash

We have also just gone through this process, but make sure you set the SSL cert section in business options, as otherwise it keeps throwing people back to the http site and google shopping still refuses to accept it.

                Quick Update

I Just thought I would leave a quick update on my difficulties with http and https implementation. The basic answer is to find a hosting company that knows what they are doing and have experience with Actinic / Sellerdeck. After pulling my hair out for weeks with the frustrations and lack of solutions from the host I had been with for over 10 year and Sellerdeck technical support. I found some recommendations in the forum for a hosting company called Host-It, from the first moment I contacted them my life became a whole lot simpler.

Host-It offer specific Actinic (Sellerdeck) hosting packages, on low density servers specifically maintained to ensure full compatibility with Sellerdeck sites. They organised the SSL certificates, assisted me in "finding" the correct setting within the network section of Sellerdeck and ensured that the server was configured to allow all of my sites main pages to be presented as http and the checkout to be served by https. The results are great, Google merchant services (shopping) are happy that the checkout is on a secure server, Google search can still find all my pages using http links and all content for the checkout pages can be referenced using https links to solve problems with mixed content pages.

Although I have been using and customising our Sellerdeck sites for many years, I have little experience with hosting server configurations. Working with a hosting company that knows how to correctly host Sellerdeck and has highly experienced staff that you can actually speak to, results in problems being resolved quickly and effectively.

Moving hosting companies is always a worrying option, but finding a great company with staff (particularly Marc) that can find solutions makes everything so much easier.

PS. I have not connection to Host-It other than being a happy customer

                  That's good news Toby.

Google are putting more and more emphasis on having all pages served by SSL - you might want to consider putting your entire site on SSL. There are some steps you would need to go through but I think it would be worth it.
