Too many orders to load - delete some?

I have ticked only show orders from the last 30 days to improve performance and prevent crashes on taking a snapshot, I have over 50k orders now and wondered if this needs to be reduced? I regularly compact the database but noticing slow performance opening orders ect.

Is there a safe way to delete orders in bulk, manually checking them would take a very long time...

I used to clear a years worth by clicking on an order and then scroll and SHIFT-click to select the whole range... it is slow but works.

I seem to remember someone previously posting that they would save a snapshot as an order archive before deleting orders. This way they could always open the snapshot to check any order details in the future if they needed to.
