    SFTP SD2018 Failure

I have set up my Network Setting in SD2018, host 1and1, using 1and1's instructions, which are to change the host name to a long one containing a row of numerals, change the port from 21 to 22, and tick SFTP. However, I get the error message, "Connected, but failed to receive greeting from FTP server". My user name is as given by 1and1 and no change from SD2016, and my password the same. Any suggestions as to the problem?

Do you have an FTP client like FileZilla?

No. I just use SD for ftp.

Have you got a secure ftp account setup in your 1and1 control panel?

        https://community.1and1.com/the-new-...control-panel/

This should work if you're on a unix server.

I haven't tried it yet but am just about to have a go.

I've been unable to connect to my 1and1 unix hosting using Sellerdeck V18 and SFTP.

The settings I have work with SFTP using FileZilla so it looks like there's a problem with Sellerdeck.

The error mesage I get is the same one as Sarah gets "Connected, but failed to receive greeting from FTP server"

Yes. It is because 1and1 have changed my package to sftp that I have the problem, as it was working fine with ftp until yesterday afternoon, when they applied my ssl certificate and changed ftp to sftp at the same time. I have got the new web settings for sftp from what they are giving me ie new host name, port 22, and tick SFTP box in SD web settings.

              Hi Sarah,

Can you not just untick the 'use Secure FTP' box and change the port back to 21?

That works for me, even with the home123456789.1and1-data.host setting as the server host.

SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) is not to be confused with FTPS (Secure FTP).
It runs on top of the SSH (Secure Shell) protocol and by default uses port 22 for communications.

SellerDeck is using FTPS not SFTP.

FTPS commonly runs on port 990 and sometimes on port 21. The primary difference is that port 990 is an Implicit FTPS, and port 21 is an Explicit FTPS. If a client connects to an FTPS server on port 990, the assumption is that the client intends to perform SSL.

I have tested FTPS on 20i hosting. It works on port 21 but not 22 nor 990.

When I used port 22 I also got the message "Connected, but failed to receive greeting from FTP server".

When I used port 990 I got the message "Connect Rejected (or failed for some other reason)"

Can you test your 1&1 accounts using port 21 and 990

Right. I hadn't realised Sellerdeck wasn't using SFTP.

                  With 1and1

Port 21 gives the error message:

Your FTP Server does not support Secure FTP so Secure FTP will be disabled in Network Settings
Port 900 it spends quite some time trying to connect then says:

                  An FTP error occurred: -
Request: ->Opening connection to home12345679.1and1-data.host on port 900

Error: Connect Rejected (or failed for some other reason)

1and1 help files say they support FTPS on their windows servers using Port 990 but for unix servers to use SFTP.

Is there a reason Sellerdeck aren't supporting SFTP.

Because SFTP is FTP for SSH which is command line access to a server.

I see you tried port 900.

1&1 uses port 990 for FTPS (bloody acronyms!!)

I did try Port 990 as well. It didn't do anything.

Not quite. SFTP is an extension of SSH for file transfer so it's purpose is secure FTP rather than command line access.

It's clear from everything 1and1 publishes and from tests I've run that they only support SFTP on their unix servers, not FTPS.

Did Sellerdeck actually ask for any guidance on what protocols they'll support or have they done their usual thing of just doing something without looking at what's needed to work with the major web hosts or indeed asking us as users what it is we actually need them to do?

To be honest, I do wish we saw more foresight from Sellerdeck in specifying these new features they develop in advance rather than just doing something and then finding problems afterwards.

A quick poll of secure FTP support for the main hosts that come to mind results in the following:

                            1and1 - SFTP
                            123-reg - SFTP
                            Host-it - FTPS

                              Sorted

I have changed port back to 21 (not 22), kept new host name as given by 1and1 for sftp, unticked SFTP, and site now uploads and no error messages!! Uh?! Thanks for everybody's help.
