Product References?

I have some products which I would like to have in multiple sections & sub-sections & have done this by copy / paste in the contents tree.

This works fine apart from the fact that a different product reference must be used. Assuming this is mandatory (?), is there a way of consolidating product references for stock taking / re-ordering..........?

Excuse my ignorance here, but I am trying to load my store for the first time.

After you have copied the item... Paste as 'duplicate product'
This will create a duplicate with the same reference number.
