Why so many blank HTML lines

I have just looked at the HTML for one of the pages on my shop, and there are just over 7000 lines in the HTML - it looks as if a large number of these are just empty lines.

Is there any way of removing these to speed up the page loads?

BTW, I noticed an improvement in page load times when I compressed the CSS for the site.
