discount vouchers

I had hoped to set up a 'discount voucher' scheme for my products, i am convinced that Actinic sales told me I could before I purchased catalog, when I asked how it worked they said I must upgrade, which is Hundreds of pounds just to get the 1 feature I need. Paypal (who I use) have explained there is another way, but it looks very complicated ( for me) - is it something a novice should attempt and if so any tips?

It's something i've never heard an expert do, so a novice should certainly step away from the idea IMO. If the few hundred pound you need to pay will not be wiped off 10 times over by offering this feature, i'd scrap the idea as it's not really going to do anything to improve things, if it can't shoulder a few hundred quid in cost?

Catalog allows you to have a global cart level discount, maybe that's what the confusion was about.
