Product not coming up on list in Discounts

I am getting very frustrated at not be able to set up in Marketing: Discounts & Surcharges an offer where the customer puts in a Coupon Code which entitles them to a free bag of sweets. I have followed instructions and other threads, and referred to offers I have set up previously, but the problem is that only 4 products come up in the list of products for more me to select the bag of sweets, none of which are in the relevant group even.

I have created a Group for the bag of sweets and put the sweets in that group (only item in the group) and the product is visible. I have enabled Coupons in Checkout. The only problem seems to be the lack of products to select from when Products as opposed to Groups is selected, and there is no way of entering a product by typing it. Any suggestions?

    Can anybody help with this?

How do you get a list of products to choose from to come up in the list of products in the Discounts box, so that I can choose the free product?

The product in question has been added to a new group of its own, which has been selected above.

Not tried this so don't really know but I would try making sure the free bag of sweets is not hidden on the website and that you can actually buy it.

        Not hidden

        The product is not hidden.

I managed to get it to work when I tested it live, by selecting the group that I had created of just this one product, rather than trying to select the product. However, in my test I entered the coupon code in the basket, clicked the link in the basket to take me to the product, added the product to the basket, viewed the basket and saw that it was free. Fine. I didn't complete the Checkout. However, when I tried to do it a second time, it accepted my coupon code but did not give me the free product. This concerned me because customers who have more than one go at making payment, but the coupon code would not work the second time, or they could edit their basket and then find they couldn't use the coupon again, even though they had not yet placed the order. It seems to me that the offer should be valid until the customer has clicked Confirm Order, at least, if not until payment is successful.

Because of these problems, I have abandoned the idea of using coupon codes, though I had already sent a few emails with it. No customers have taken it up. The idea had been to put a paragraph near the end of an mailshot email, "Your reward for reading this far", of a coupon code to enter with their next order giving them a free bag of sweets.
