custom product ID in options

I have a large number of products with options such as size. I need to be able to include my own reference number for each choice, but there does not appear to be any way of doing this

are you controlling stock for these options also?
If so, you'll need to set up individual products for each choice (you can do this using the product options tab of the main product) so they can be linked using permutations.

If you only want the reference for your reference then you could add it to the choice name. This would show it on the order/invoice/catalog info but not on the website if you don't include it in the "html for name" also

If you're not doing individual size related stock, then why not (as Tracey suggests) just add the ID after the size name.

I have a friend with an Actinic shop that does this for colour and size. They use a 6 digit code for the main product, 3 digits for colour and 3 more for size. They add these in brackets after each colour / size name. Their order lines thus look like:

Jacket (001234), Colour: Red (001), Size: XS (002).

They can quickly infer the full barcode 001234001002 from that.
