That doesn't sound right to me Sarah, i disagree. If actinic is setup to give Sage what it wants but from a design perspective you hide/show certain fields for your users, there is no way Sage would/could know which way a blockif was deciding on a layout. Sage will work from your underlying settings and get this info from the database, what you have set and what you have on show can be two very different things.

Excatly Lee. There is no reason all the messy calcs can't go on 'under the hood' - they need to, to comply with VAT rules, and for accounting, exports to Sage etc. It just that consumers don't need to or want to see it. They only need to see the price they are paying. The only real place a VAT breakdown should appear is on the printed invoice, and even then, it can be religated to a side note. Its totally inappropriate for the shopping cart. Could we maybe have a comment from Actinic regarding this?

To make it worse, there seems to be no clear route to showing VAT INCLUSIVE prices throughout (other than using simple tax - which does not work with pro-rata shipping - so is a non starter. If selling zero rated and regular vatable goods, you have to use pro-rata shipping to satisfy VAT man).
I have read through a lot of these posts about Pro-rata VAT on shipping charges. My brain is beginning to fry!

We have mostly vat-able items, but also have a few books. I want to switch from vat exclusive to vat inclusive pricing. But I get a message popping up saying that the pro-rata vat is not compatible with this.

I am resigned to the final invoice looking a bit complicated. But since we sell a lot to consumers, I want to show vat inclusive prices, which I think I have a legal requirement to do. And I also want to have the pro-rata vat on shipping, which is also a legal requirement.

Can I be legal on both counts?

Rather than getting too hung up on it I would just charge flat rate vate on the shipping rather than pro-rata'ing it.

It's not technically correct but hmrc won't care as you'll be giving them more vat than is really necessary and your customers won't care as the vat on shipping is going to be peanuts anyway.

ps. you can enter tax exclusive prices but display as price inclusive on the product pages. it's just the cart and checkout that has problems with this.
