Thanks for the help everyone. Some really good info and pointers there which will keep me busy looking at which is the best fit solution for us.

I've had a look at initiating an automatic upload via a comand line and it seems it doesn't play very nicely with multisite licence i.e. it prompts for the password. I wonder is there anyway round this?

The command line has switches for username and password:

        · /p – will initiate a preview
        · /u – will initiate an upload
        · /d – will initiate a download
        · /x – will initiate an export
        · /q – will close Actinic
        · /s – will change the Actinic site (see Licensing Actinic Sites)
        · /n <username> - will supply a username if you need to log onto the application
        · /w <password> - will supply a password if you need to log onto the application

Sorry, not sure how I missed that

If it's any use at this late stage, I run an oracle apex database and export order information to update my stock control (though I'm running Actinic 9). This is simply because my Oracle app does very much more (like purchasing, etc) that Actinic doesn't, nor would I expect it to.

As opposed to taking stock levels to update, I would be more inclined to just do orders/returns and update rather than replace, if you get my drift.
