10 live, 11 test

Please forgive me if this is already described somewhere I failed to look...

I'm using a fairly messed-about v10 and thinking about moving to 11. Is there a for-dummies level guide somewhere to setting up two versions on the same server with the old one running live and the new one not visible to the outside world?

there is more than one way but the easiest is to switch to test mode in V11 under the web menu

this will allow you to upload a site to your exist domain without over writing your existing scripts or files

other ways are more technical involving different domains and sub domains

OK - sounds good, I think.

Working this way would I still be able to maintain and potentially tweak the v10 system or would that become locked in place? Also, is there anything about the v11 setup I couldn't be completely certain about while it was in test mode? Checkout functions and so forth?

Actually I should have thought about this a bit more before posting in the first place. I believe I'm envisioning having two sites, both 'live' but the outside world is directed to the old one. Something like

www.cka-net.com takes you to the current site

www.cka-net.com/nextgen/index.html takes you to the new one

and then I could even let selected third parties have a go at the new site.

too complicated for bears of little brain like me to do?

That's basically how the test mode works, its a live site that works as the main site would. If you make any changes in V10 you will need to make these in V11 so my advice is do everything you want in V10 first unless your completely redoing your site in V11

I may make a lot of changes... I made a bit of a dog's dinner of some parts of the existing system due to lack of knowledge. In particular I hard-coded some things that would have been better done through the setups.

One thing I have learned is to wish I always had two versions available so I could try my latest mad idea without producing a non-functioning web site.

Their is nothing to stop you having another copy of actinic on another pc using the same license and running it in test mode and doing all your mods on that prior to changing things on your working version.

with your site URL where I have put www.livesite.co.uk

so to be specific about home pages,

www.cka-net.com/index.html will be generated by the live v10 software and not overwritten by v11, which will write

/acatalog/test/index.html

and

/acatalog/index.html will be generated by the live v10 software and not overwritten by v11, which will write

/acatalog/test/acatalog/index.html

and there is no danger of navigation through one site crossing the line and ending up on the other?

All Actinic generated links will be fine but if you have any hardcoded ones they may go back to the V10 site instead of the V11 ones. A separate set of script files are installed as well so that the old ones are not corrupted.

OK thanks - I'll have to see how this works out when I've got some time to download 11 and set it up. I'm a little concerned about the index.html but we'll see. It's not a big site by most people's standards so easily reloaded if everything went wrong.
