cart / checkout buttons css replacement?

I am looking to replace the checkout button images with CSS buttons

Basically we are replacing lots of buttons and image links with css buttons, faster loading and means we wont have lots of different link styles around the site (inherited template problem) ... anyway how do i go about this?

when I try to see if there is a class attached there appears to be none ... if I apply a css class would that work (tried but can't preview it locally).
