database backup fail on exit

when I exit Business V11.02 MCPA I get the following error:

"The database you are trying to compact is in use by another program. Close the program down and select compact databases again"

this happens when there is no other s/w running and I have waited for a while so that all the processes have shut down.

Any ideas what is causing the problem?
