resolutions

Hi,

Does anyone know of any sites that give a % for different size resolutions (i.e. 1024/800 etc). I want a 'general public' stat as all the ones I find seem to be uni or tech sites and I guess, would be more heavily pushing towards 1024+.

What do you design for?

I feel 1024 is the optimum.

but there are still a few with 800, an others with 1600 or widescreen.

I'm veering towards more fluid designs nowadays, making it look its best for the 1024 to 1280 range.

thus sometimes there will be a few wrap arounds for 800,s and a lot of white space for 1600 plus.

excellent. I have been designing over the last few days for 1024 thinking that most people used that (most of my younger/affluent audience anyhow) but then I got the jeebies and thought I had better check!

I like fluid designs but not done one yet... once this one is finished as a static 1024, I think I might modify it and see what I can do.

Your site web stats should let you know the percentages of view at the different resolutions.

I tend to also design towards 1024 but in using CSS for the layout so if the resolutions do drop any right hand side boxes / navigation etc are simply pushed beneath without the need to scroll horizontally.

I would veer away from static if you can.

Too true .. any design should be designed from the ground up and be allowed to degrade as gracefully as possible. I tend to place the vital components in their own <div> wherever possible to span the whole design and simply align left or right to ensure full visibility in any situation / resolution
