    Site/Design Upgrade

I have upgraded a site using Designer which I am now ready to deploy and have installed Business Client on another PC. When I import the snapshot into Business Client I get an option screen saying that the design is being upgraded and I have to manually accept every layout upgrade. This is ok except that I have been clicking for 20 minutes and the progress bar is only at about 10% and it says there are 1258 imports to be done.

I assume that the version of Business Client is newer than my Designer but having to go through this procedure is a bit pointless.

Now found an option to automate the process but doing this reported errors on the default Actinic site then crashed V8.

      Now getting multiple errors:

      Upgrader failed - try again

Failed to load files of theme business. Upgrader failed

Unexpected error. Check settings and try again

      Import abnormally terminated

Tried restarting but upgrader opens on restart and repeats above errors

Now managed to get V8 to stay open only to find that it has completely trashed my design

Why do these things always happen on a weekend

          Hmmm.

Please check 'Help | About' on both copies of Actinic and ensure that they are both using the production version of 8.0.0.

The next version of Actinic (8.0.1) does automate the process easier (no multiple clicks) , but I cannot see why Actinic would trigger the design upgrade if you have designed the store on the production release of Actinic. The same layouts should be in both versions of Actinic - with the same version. Are you using a database that used to be in a beta version of Actinic, or did you start your design with a clean production database?

There's a limit to the support I can give online. This might be something you have to work through with the support team.

Hi Chris, It is only happening when I use the Business Client disk I got through the post last week - I uninstalled it and downloaded V8 from your website and all works OK. I am assuming that the disk is a different version to that on your website??

I'll check this - that's a little concerning if we are shipping different versions to the one on the site.

I'm also getting this with the current release. Import the V7 snapshot and it says 'Failed to load the files of theme 'Business'. Upgrader failed.

                Any ideas?

                  Hi Steve

For some reason, Actinic is not finding the original theme information in your snapshot file. Another way you can can try upgrading (if you are installing v8 on the same pc as v7) is to run the v8 'setup.exe' installation file again. This won't re-install v8 - but it will give you the option to upgrade a v7 site into your existing v8 installation.

If that fails as well, I would suggest registering an email support query with Actinic support at http://www.actinic.co.uk/support/register.htm and see whether they get any further with your upgrade.

                    Hi Chris,

It's on a different PC. I don't mind admiting I am not too hot on this stuff and have decided for safety sake to move actinic to our new PC and start fresh on there. That means I can continue to run the existing V7 site on the old PC with no risk of destroying both installations. May seem paranoid but our site is our livelihood.

Maybe I'll try another snapshot and see if that works. Could be the snapshot at fault I spose?

Could be. I think it's more likely that your original v7 design has lost the connection back to its original source theme for some reason - so this information is not in the snapshot. Again, the email support team can help you out if you still have difficulties.

I did switch my installation to this PC before by just copying the Site1 folder. It worked OK but would that have messed it up? Trying another snapshot now.

I just received 8.02 in the post.
I tried installing upgrade from version 7.06 site to 8.02 Busv8MS: first it could not find site. When I looked in 8's site folder and the site I clicked on to open first was not there. The demo and other site were, but because I wanted the other site to open and it wasn't there it said can't find database. I uninstalled 8.02 and did a clean install, then tried to open a good 7.06 snapshot and got 'Failed to load the files of theme 'Business'. Upgrader failed. This is stinky since my site is Suspended and I'm loosing money. Please help!!

Tried again by running setup.exe again tried opening site and when on Preparing site upgrade it froze on Checking design text changes... well like a british person, stiff upper lip and all that. Feel like a door mat at the wrong house.

Open V7 and allow ordering then update the site and it will get the site up and running.

You can play with V8 at your leasure as you can still run the site with V7 by putting V8 into test mode.

Thanks for telling this! The note marked IMPORTANT, that came with the disk and other insert, said you can't run older licence, key retired.

Maybe if I read the upgrade guide http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=23756
I wouldn't have let the note stray me away from the reality and importance of the task.

I'm sure with careful analysis of all the written materials and a support contract, problems will be alleviated. Who wants problems. What kind of quality of life is being fried by a screen. I remember a a computer consultant back around 1995 who loved to break things to fix them.

Most confusing upgrade I had to deal with since 1995.

Well I guess you can't compare Actinic to adobe cs suite. It does quite a lot in one place. In the scheme of things The crue at Actinic should be proud of what they have accomplished. I understand the priority, predatory, ego instinic to control all functions to survive. I'm sure they are aware of allocation. I'm not very good at it.

Plus rant vent under the stress of not knowing when to stop and wanting to see orders processed faster: Wish design was back to 7, as I finally got my head around that one. New design seems chaotic.: I'm use to Golive and Dreamweaver. Why can't Actinic leave design to them. Just tell us where the parts can be found by clicking on them and then opening in the design program of our choice. I think all they had to do is add more links to specific parts, as in 7 template manager. I'd choose Golive or BBedit any day. Taking me hours to change the navigation bar which actinic changed on upgrade. This would take seconds in golive. I have dreamweaver and when I registered actinic and went back to actinic preview shows only netvars. Hope it's something I'm just missing.

My problem with upgrading I believe is due to a custom template I called kobheadfoot. Never got the message as referred to in Upgrade Guide Page 4 :Warnings You May Encounter
You may be shown this prompt:If this happens, check 'Design | Themes' in v6/v7 for the name of the theme
that your design was originally based on. Enter it into the field here. I noticed that 7 let's you export the theme, but 8 has a colour theme extension which is different and I don't see a way to import the theme before importing the snapshot to avoid error. Interestingly, when I used the evaluation beta 8 I did not get the upgrade error: Could not find Business theme.

I then persevered and managed to get the site into 8 by trying again, by running set up again and just choosing one site to upgrade, but that got errors. Now with the theme in 8, I was able to import a snap shot after a few freezes and errors. Finally in and now the dreaded learning curve of finding were all parts are. Nightmare changing navigation bar: had to click on each link and change styles individually for each link. Just because I can't find the whole part and open it in anything. Makes me want to spit blood. But I will persevere. http://community.actinic.com/showthr...328#post125328

Day three. Finally getting my head around the new design. Not as bad as I thought. I though actinic.css was still in use, but now actinic stylesheet in select page type and save as custom. Now I have two referenced external style sheets, as site has custom pages. It would be nice if on these major upgrades telephone help was around on weekends, as this is the quiet time and I get most work done. Still haven't had a clean install or a clean upgrade. Site options /Layout has 2 Checkout Pages layout Checkout Pages layout Login Page layout Login Page layout (4) Act_PrimaryCheckout(upgraded) and duplicates of the rest. Guess I'll have to start over. Don't like this.

It would have been nice if shipping was concentrated on, as this is probably the most contentious element of a sale. I don't have any need for the qimmicks of most popular sales, or also bought. Just a simple if I'm in the uk and i purchase over X net I get free shipping, if I'm in china and i purchase over X net I get ŁY off my order. If I have Z account over X net in Uk free shipping. If I have B account over X net in China I get ŁY off my order shipping. As known with Retail customs one can afford more of a shipping discount and Trade less. All in All customers don't want to pay for shipping, so why not hide in the product price. Been there done that. It's to hard to manage cost price ratios against competitors or even claculate for one self. Heavier low cost just look so expensive no one buys them. Ofcourse it can work with low weight high cost items. Most transparent and fair is charge your cost and give alittle back when you can. This makes a larger percentage of customers and suppliers happy. Percentages matter.
