I have trial version uploaded to my site ver7. I have downloaded for evaluation the new ver 8. If i load this to my site will it overwrite the old site which I wish to discard. or do I have to manually remove using ftp software?

If it's a trial version (i.e. it's uploaded to trials.actinic.com) then you can always register for a separate trial hosting account for your v8 store in order to keep both sites at the same time.
If you use the same hosting details for v7 and v8 then the v8 store will happily overwrite the v7 store without you having to remove any files via FTP.
