BaseRef and CookieCheck

Would I be right in thinking that <actinic:variable name="BaseHref" /> and <Actinic:COOKIECHECK/> are not required for an Actinic generated index page (outside the acatalog folder) to work properly? Is it just the section and product pages that require these variables?

I would leave them in. I would have thought that the scripts (if you link to the search, cart, checkout or even product/section scripts) need the basehref and if you display a cart summary or have logged in members then you'll probably also need the cookie reference.
