    advice/tips required editing layouts

    hmmm...
I've already posted questions about frgaments within v8 (layouts, styles etc)

so in my enthusiastic rush to make it work as I want, I have (at times - since 4am this morning) screwed up my installation and then spent ages trying to get it back correct. (it is now correct - 7:05am - so its a waste of time posting code as I've fixed the problem)

so I'm looking for tips as to how to find out where I make mistakes AND then how to correct them

the layout is now back working, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that has struggled to get the mistake corrected, and yes - snapshot, snapshot, snapshot - but that doesn't help you if you've spent the last two hours getting close to what you want and then making that mistake, going on a couple of steps, swapping to design view and finding everything has dissapeared and now you've got to try to get it working again.

first immediate tip - snapshot, snapshot, snapshot - don't forget to take a snapshot when you are about to experiment

second immediate tip - swap to the design tab, and press the small exclamation icon near the top of your page preview - this gives you a list of errors - I'm not saying how to correct the errors, but at least you now know how to find if the page has any errors.

third immediate tip - when you THINK you've found the layout problem, use the "Compare to Factory Version" BEFORE you "Revert to Factory Settings"

what about the Design-Library-Layout new tab that hides ALL the entries EXCEPT those you have changed, and then allows you to sort those entries showing BY DATE - at lease that way, you can find out the last one or two layouts you've edited and sort them out.

    Hi Kev

If you get 8.0.3 beta, you will see that there is a checkbox at the bottom of the Layouts tab of the library labelled 'Highlight Customised Layouts With (*)'. If you click this box, any layouts you edit will be highlighted in the library

The other technique I would suggest is when you want to edit a layout, why not create your own custom one first rather than editing the default ones. You can create new layouts in the library by right-clicking on the layout and selecting 'New Layout'.
