V8 & V7 sites possible on same server?

We currently have have 2 V7 sites running quite happily on the same webserver. One of our sites is about to be redesigned by an outside designer and I was wondering if he designs it in V8 would it be possible to run both the existing V7 site and the new V8 on the same server without any issues?

Alternatively, should he design it in V7 and then should we wait until V8 bugs have been sorted before upgrading?

Your designer should be able to answer these questions for you?

Sorry, my designer has never worked with Actinic before so he would not know the answers. I was looking for an answer from some one in Actinic or from some one with experience of V7 and V8 sites working together.

I have a v7 site and v8 on the same server with no problems

just make sure that they don't both use the same script id number !!!!

I would design it in v8 and just deal with the bugs as they arise.

the new features that are available in v8 would in my opion outway the possible bugs

Assuming it is on a separate domain, but the same web server then no problem..

If the same domain, then when he uploads the v8 it will overwrite the v7 ( so be very carefull)...

You can use test/trial mode on the web menu so it uploads in a sub folder and under different cgi number, but again be sure he does not get mixed up and forget to enable it..

You should use the new site in test mode otherwise you will be breaking your licence agreement and may hit a duplicate content penalty with Google.

oh I forgot about that bit ... oops

our 2 sites are on the same server but different domains

as he said you cannot put a v7 & v8 site on the same domain

CORRECTION: unless you change the default catalog installation folder from www.yoursite.com/acatalog

                Yes you can!

                Put v7 on http://www.domain.com/shop1/acatalog/
                Put v8 on http://www.domain.com/shop2/acatalog/

And make sure the two stores have different script IDs.

Thanks for your replies. Our 2 sites are currently in 2 different sub-folders using different cgi numbers and run together without problems.

It looks from your replies that the 2 can co-exist together so I'll give V8 a go in test mode. If that works ok then I will upgrade one of my sites and hand it over to the designer to work his magic.
