    Do not delete test mode

is it possible to be able to keep both normal and test operating at the same time

i.e. the main site online and use test for testing, but at present it deletes the test site when you change back to normal. so if im in test mode and have a enquiry about something online I have to change from test to online and loose the info in test

Bit goblegook but i think you know what I mean

    Hi Chris

We currently do this with our client sites.

We have live on one machine and testing on the other. It is just a case of keeping tabs on which snapshot is imported into the correct site.

On one machine you could create a 'ghost' site I suppose and use that as testing?

        Thanks all

Problem is using Multi user on the computers so have say site 1 online and need to work on test/site 1 for a longer period than 1 or 2 days and also need to check things out with site 1 now and again

I can make snapshots of test/site1 and keep track that way but would prefer to have both sites running at once if possible

Understand I can make a new site within my licences and use that for the test site but making life complicated

Really just need option to clear out test site when changing to production mode or leave as it is

Must be a few like me who would like the same option, without constant swopping of snapshots etc

          Hi Chris

Well - having two sites is really the only way to do this - but I'll add your request to the wish list.

I will second the request to have the option not to delete test sites, its a real pain with big sites

            Cheers

I will third it, the site i've been working on takes 30 mins to upload with 3,500 products. One thing i did which managed to work as a workaround was this:

When i wanted to come out of test mode, before doing so, i FTP into the site and make a copy of the test site and put this into a different location where Actinic cannot delete it.

I can then go back to Actinic and flick out of test mode and the original copy of the test site is removed, however i still have my copy which i move back to where the original was, once i want to be back in test mode. Its not immediate but far quicker than uploading.

Jo's comment in the previous post is probably the most important here, if you need to flick out of test mode just to download orders, then want to go straight back, it is incredibly time consuming. The ultimate solution is to install a second copy of the software on a different PC and work on this without touching the live site's computer.

An easier way is to unplug your network lead before switching (phone line if using a modem) as actinic can then not connect to the site and delete it.

You do get an error message but just ignore it

                Cheers

This is Ok unless you do need to connect and download any orders. If you cut the connection, you can't get to the orders either, which was what Jo was talking about.

Good idea though if you are not needing to download orders.

                    Sorry Lee

ment to say, as soon as you have switched you can plug it back in

                    Cheers

Even better then, we now have the best solution to keep the test site! Nice one!

I can't wait until it's 2006 and computers have moved on and software is user friendly and helpful, this Commodore 64 is killing me, takes 14 days to upload 18 products.

                          No Probs

I am a big fan of "I'm In Control" and no piece of software is going to do what it likes, well i'll try and stop it anyway i can. I have even pulled the plug out of a pc on a number of occassions.

Just wish i could get my staff to do what i want.

                          Cheers

Ive been playing with this on my own site which I am upgrading and when I went to production mode the test site was not deleted even though V8 said it would be. I can change things in test mode and upload to check and then switch back to production mode to download orders.

ruralwebdesign.co.uk/acatalog/test/index.html and www.ruralwebdesign.co.uk are both live at the same time. I may have missunderstood the post or my V8 is not working correctly but the test site is not deleted.

I concur with this also. The fact that it apparently deleted it in about 4 seconds, never quite seemed correct. What i think happens is that the test part is deleted as part of the process when you next upload.

It doesn't connect to the server for long enough to genuinely delete it there and then, i think it just sets a flag to do so next time it uploads.
