I would have presumed that when entering products also bought in one product it would automatically cross reference and add the parent product in the also bought of the child product. Any way of this happening without having to add manually in the child product?

Looking at it from a different angle, with an also bought product list, the main focus is on the first product purchased. Considering a typical example, a customer might have bought a Printer and also bought cartridges or toners or printer paper. But it need not necessarily be true the other way round.
But if such orders are placed, the Also bought lists will be re-generated based on the Auto generate options. However, I can add a wish list item to perhaps add an extra feature allowing merchants to cross-reference products.

I see where you are coming from. Perhaps it's not worth putting this on the wishlist.
