Multiple VAT rates on a product...

Hi all,

I'm currently making an online clothes shop with actinic (euroschools.blueprintit.co.uk) and I'm having trouble with the VAT rates.

I have a product that needs two VAT rates applied to it. E.g A sweatshirt that has ZERO VAT on it from sizes 25"-32", the same sweatshirt then needs to have 17.5% VAT from sizes 34"-58".

It's down to the fact that childrens clothes don't include VAT and adults do.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

I would create two products one children's one adults. Assign VAT to the adults and set zero rated vat to the child's.

That way everything is kept clean and tidy

Thanks very much for replying, ideally we would like to keep the childrens and adults sizes under one choice. Separating them isn't really an option in this case although it's very good idea.

Is there another way around this?

Or associate products with each of the options and the pricing should bring in the VAT associated with the underlying product.

I think perhaps two components one for adults one for children and assign zero rated tax for kids?

This would produce two drop down menus but you get to keep one product.

Thanks for replying, I think that this is the correct solution but I've got a slight problem. When on the component, I've filled in the table but the products column is greyed out, how can I enable it?

I would check the VAT rules to see if you need to seperate them as my understanding is that size may or may not matter with school garments

If the item is clearly for school children (could be printed with the school logo) and marked for school childrens use only (could be written on your company name logo inside) then vat is not applicable even for adult sizes

This would not be the case for a plain sweatshirt as it is not only for school children

Contact your vat office to clarify their interpretation as that is what counts

You need to add an attribute (call it size or whatever) to the component and then add a number of choices to the attribute.

Then the component will have a 'permutations' tab that should allow you to associate a product with each of the choices.

(I hope I got this right, I always get confused by the terminology of this).

Thanks Mike, I also get confused by the terminology!! I found out why the products were greyed out, it was because I had two attributes, you can only have one.

Your solution worked although the shopping basket is slighlty untidy, ideally I want the price on the top line, no price or quantity for the components and also have the VAT included in the product instead of it being added on in a VAT column. You can see all this at euroschools.blueprintit.co.uk and click on Infants and Primary schools then Afon-y-Felin Primary. It's the 1st product (Reversible Mistral), sizes 3-13 have zero tax and the rest have 17.5%.

Thanks Chris, that's good to know. I think it does include VAT on adult sizes because the website is an online version of a real shop, I'll check anyway just in case!!

yes, the VAT display in the cart is a mess which actinic know about.

To remove the separate display of product and component, go back to the component and tick 'component as separate order line'. Then go to the product and under the component tab (or wherever it is on V8) set the pricing model to be 'sum of components prices' and then tick the box that appears marked 'no order line for main product'

Thanks for replying again Mike. I've tried that, the problem is that I want both the product and component to show in the basket but don't want a price or quantity for the component and the main price should be opposite the product and not the component (did that make sense??).

If there's no solution to this then I may have to settle for what it's like now, my worry is that customers will be confused by the two quantity's and the price not being on the main product.

There is miles of vat to go through to find the relevant items about school clothing, but the allowance is there to allow 6-4 14year olds to buy school clothing, but these items must be distinguished as school items and not for general sale

We looked into it when a school wanted us to make up different sizes for lab coats, with a school name on or simular they are ok but as plain lab coats they have the 34" cut off

yes, it does make sense but actinicwon't work that way (at least not if you want the price to vary with the component/associated product.

The best way I've found to do it is to set up the associated products with a full description as the name and then use the associated products name in the cart. that way the customer doesn't get confused with what's in the cart.

I put the name of the product as the component and selected no order line for main product, my only problem with this is that it doesn't have the link back to the product.

There's a couple of solutions that are close so we'll probably have a go at hard coding the rest to try an get the basket how we want it.

Chris, I'm glad you mentioned that because after ringing the client it's answered a couple of questions. He buys his stock in as plain (not labelled school) so he's charged VAT on the adult sizes. One very important thing that did come up is that he wants the products to show VAT (at the moment the VAT only shows when the customer gets to the basket and they may be surprised by the extra price). Glad I found this out now because it's saved me a load of time, so thanks. I need to make my prices Inc. of VAT.
