    Uploading first website

    Hi,

I am trying to upload my first website to overwrite my existing website and replace all the data with what I have created in Actinic.

When I go to the web site configuration wizard I am entering my ftp address, username and password. I then get to 'Web Site Address' on the 'Analysing web site' window with a message advising me that Actinic is checking the website sample file.

I have left the program to do it's work for up to 30 minutes but cannot get past this stage. The wizard window still appears in the background and now asks for my web site's url but I cannot enter any information in this window as the first window pushes itself straight back to the front of the screen.

I have rebooted my pc and turned off my firewall but nothing seems to help.

    Can anyone help?

odd that it takes nearly half an hour. What is your connection speed like? Also your computer system, is it quite old and having trouble dealing with actinic?

      Trevor,

First connect to the site with FTP and determine if you have an acatalog folder - if you do, check that permissions are set to 777 (assuming Linux/Apache). Then check the cgi-bin folder - does it exist and are permissions set to 755.

Now check the path from cgi-bin to acatalog - use two dots to represent moving up one level in the folder structure. If acatalog and cgi-bn are at the same level, this will give you ../acatalog/ - if cgi-bin is at the same level as httpdocs and [edit]acatalog[/edit] inside httpdocs, this will give ../httpdocs/acatalog/

Try entering the details you believe are correct in Web | Network Settings and push the test button. That will give you an error message if something is not right - and from that we should be able to offer more specific advice.

        Hi,

No, both folders are set to 700. When I try and change the permissions in CuteFTP I can originally see the correct setting number (e.g. 755) but if I go back into the properties tab the permission is back at 700.

Can you advise what I am doing wrong?

Also, before I tried this Actinic did once get past this stage but failed at the next stage as it advised that the CGI permissions were not at the correct level. Should have been 750 (?) I beleive this is why yhe acatalog folder now exists on the server.

Perhaps this helps back up your initial theory?

To answer the other questions I have a 2GB Tiscali connection and a brand new Sony Vaio BX295 laptop. All websites and ftp are working fine.

        Hope you can help further.

I have just tried ammending the Network Settings as advised and the test came back that the operation failed as it timed out.

is it unix or windows hosting?

            sounds like windows....

if you don't know, who is your host? and what package have you got?

you won't get anywhere until you can set those permissions to 755 and 777 as Bill says

If you cannot change permissions, you will not get a successful install. Who is the website host?

                Hi,

The hosting was arranged through the web designers who created the concept pages. I will need to speak to them to determine this.

Thanks for your help so far.

My hosting is with Fasthost who have advised they are not able to change the permissions to these folders as this affects the security of other sites they host.

                    Can anyone recommend a host?

                        Hi,

OK, this seems to be going from worse to worse....

The web designer have now changed the site from Windows to Linux and also altered the permissions of the two folders.

I have left the site upload for 2 days as advised by them to clear the IP cache.

Now when trying to upload the website my ftp permissions are giving an error message, unable to connect to ftp ***********.co.uk due to an unknow reason. Error code 500?

Can anyone please advise what is going on?

                          Error code 500
This indicates an internal server error. Two days to upload is not right. They should be able to set all this up at thier end and send you a snapshot with it all working.

Can you ftp to your site with an ftp client (outside of Actinic)?
If not you may need to confirm the ftp login info with your host or designers.
If you can then before trying to upload try a network test to see what errors you get in Actinic.

OK, I have rebooted and when trying to upload the site again the ftp details are accepted.

I have then tried to upload the site again and got another error message stating the url is not recognised. I have typed it with and without the 'http://' and get the same error message. This is the message I got before the problem with the ftp details. I never got this message before today.

I then cancelled and tried to upload again and got my most common problem to date, which is that when the screen appears asking for the url there is another window in front of it titled 'Analysing Web Site' which will continuously place itself as the front window, meaning I cannot enter the webiste url.

                              Please can someone help again.

Thanks for your comments so far
