Capturing text with a product order

I'm building a site for a client that sells sports trophies and can also engrave them if the customer wants a name on it etc.

Is there anyway to capture text from the customer and assign it to the product.

I have tried using the Prompts tab and I can get the user to add text that way, but they always have to add text. The engraving needs to be optional.

What I would like to do is have the engraving service as a seperate product that is hidden. Then add that to the trophy as an optional component - which works great except because its an added option it does not prompt the user to input text?

Is there anyway of achieving what I'm looking for?

On p93 of the Advanced User Guide there is a section called 'Having a larger box for the 'Other Info' Prompt'. This turns the other info field into a text area box, and has the happy side effect of meaning it isn't compulsory any more.

I've now got it as I want it except that it is still compulsory. Following the steps in the advanced guide didn't seem to make it optional, any ideas?

Making it optional would really improve things for the customer.

Could it not be automatically filled with "insert text here" and the customer overwrites this if they want to use it, if not they leave it as "insert text here" and you will see this on the orders?
