    V8 upload/test problems

Has anyone else experienced this problem:

-1- Using test in network settings in v8.
-2- e-mail connection to server is lost
-3- Access to internet still ok
-4- only solution to regain e-mail access is to reboot.

this seems to happen also if I try to upload the site.

    Thanks Paul

Yep I had the same problems. It took me ages to realise that it wasn't something I was doing wrong. It might be a bug if other people are experiencing similar problems.

No problems from me - I have uploaded several V8 sites now with no problems at all.

        Thanks guys,

It may have something to do with the fact I cannot do a clean upload to the test folder yet.

Sounds more like a host problem - if you are using a cheap host then Actinic may not be able to work on the server.

            Hi Rural,

Thanks. I'm am trying to upload to the same server as the live site is at present. Trouble with CGIBIN url's mainly. The problem with e-mail happens when I use network wizard or test.

Can you clarify the terminology a little.
-1- Using test in network settings in v8.
Do you mean using Actinic in test mode (as opposed to production mode (Web | Switch to Test Mode) or using the word test somewhere in the settings?
-2- e-mail connection to server is lost
From what application? Actinic? Does not have an email connection?
-3- Access to internet still ok
              Again, from what application?

Hopefully if you can answer these, then #4 reboot might also make sense.

[Added] Just saw your response to Malcolm.

If you select Web | Switch to test mode, Actinic should adjust the Catalog URL automatically adding a /Test/ folder so that the path to Catalog becomes www.domain/acatalog/test/ - it should also automatically use the same cgi-bin, but with all the scripts renumbered to 900001 instead of 000001. Mail settings should not change and certainly should not stop working.

                Hi Bill

                No sorry I mean:

                Test in Network setup
E-mail connection via Outlook is lost ( requires reboot to access e-mail again)
Internet access via a Broswer still works.

                  Paul,

                  OK -

                  Scenario 1
you are uploading to the same domain as the live site - that's a no-no. You will have a mixture of content and a good possibility of cross-contamination.
To use the same domain to also publish your v8 site, switch into test mode.

                  Scenario 2
You have a second domain on the same server - and you have the live site on one domain, v8 on another - using a common cgi-bin. Are the script settings differentiated properly? Either one on .cgi and the other on .pl OR (more usual) one on 000001.pl and the other on 000101.pl.

                  Scenario 3
                  Something else entirely?

                    Hi Bill

                    Thanks for that.

I was merely following the advice from the Knowledge base. As I obviously want to test the v8 site a great deal before putting ie before the public.

You can run as many sites you want on the same web server as long as

                    a) Each site is using a different 'CGI-Script ID'
                    b) Each site is uploading to a different 'acatalog' folder.
                    Catalog URL: http://your.URL/site1/acatalog/
Path From CGI-BIN to acatalog Folder: ../htdocs/site1/acatalog/
And then for the second site....
                    Catalog URL: http://your.URL/site2/acatalog/
Path From CGI-BIN to acatalog Folder: ../htdocs/site2/acatalog/

I made sure the folder names were not the same, and the perl ID numbers were far apart i.e. 98 (existing live site) and 1 v8 test.

I was trying to get help for this via this thread
                    http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=24230

Starting to think v8 was a bad idea

                      Hmmm,

Two bites at the cherry - that's also a no-no.

well since you have published network settings on the other thread, shall I continue there - or here?

Here - this is your thread - the other was a hijack....

In post #10 just above - you quote from the KB

                      yourURL/Site1/acatalog/
                      yourURL/Site2/acatalog/

What the person who wrote that is assuming is that each time you add a site, you will put the brochure index page in the siteX folder and the main content will of course flow into the acatalog subfolder for that site. Your settings do not reflect that.

                      WEBSITEURL http://www.10outof10.co.uk/
                      no - this
                      PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../acatalog2/acatalog/
                      would infer
                      WEBSITEURL http://www.10outof10.co.uk/acatalog2/

that same setting would also make
                      CATALOGURL http://www.10outof10.co.uk/acatalog2/
                      into
                      CATALOGURL http://www.10outof10.co.uk/acatalog2/acatalog/

Believe it or not, I think those two little changes would give you a working site.

                        Thanks Bill

FYI I didn't post 2 messages asking the same question. this one started with the e-mail problem which turned in to a copy of my other message.

I tried what you said, only to find the same error:

Actinic is not able to run the CGI scripts on the server. It appears as if the scripts are not installed. The most likely cause is that you have an incorrect CGI-BIN URL

Catch 22 here i feel, I cannot upload the scripts without the network setting being correct; then when I test the settings it tells me the scripts are not installed.

Are you using two different domain names or trying to put two shops on one domain?

Really, the easiest and quickest way to get a v8 test site up and running at the same time as a non-v8 live site is to export the working settings from the non-v8 site and import those to v8 then switch v8 into test mode and upload.

Sorting out the upload takes someone with sufficient knowledge getting ftp access to your webspace where they can apply their acquired knowledge to work through logical alternatives until they arrive at a working setting. They would then export the working settings and send those to you.

If you want to mail me your ftp username and password off-line [don't post them here in this public forum], then I can do that for you. Alternately, you can register a support request on the Actinic website, and someone from support may do the same thing for you [though support were pretty busy and probably still are].

                            Hello Bill,

Thank you for your continued help, much appreciated.

I am trying to upload two sites to the same domain. v8 will be in test mode while the layout and testing is completed.

I will contact the helpdesk on Monday as we have a number or serious issues concerning the upgrade to v8.

                            i.e
-1- Cannot create snapshot in V7 ( even after patch update) keeps crashing
-2- V8 keeps interfering with e-mail service after testing network settings
-3- V8 will often crash when changing one part of the layout.
-4- V8 is driving me nuts!!
the list goes on; apart from that all is great !!

Going to be one heck of a phone call tomorrow I can tell you. Anyway, thanks again for your assistance.
