    cgi bin errors

    Hi All,

    I'm upgrading a v6 site to v8.

On installing v8 it detected, imported and upgraded the old site, no problems there.

However on testing the network settings I get the following error.

You do not have write permissions to the cgi-bin directory "/globalmapping/www/cgibin/" or it does not exist.

This is using the exact same settings that v6 works with, i've even tried exporting the network settings from v6 and importing them into v8 with no luck.

I've also ran the v8 network wizard and while it gives different settings for some items it still comes up with the cgi-bin error.

I'll post both the network settings files below, any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm running out of patience and hair

Your paths are different for the cgi-bin in the two versions,

have you tried removing the global mapping bit

I've tried both sets of settings in v8 to no avail

and changing the cgi path in the v8 wizard derived settings just gives me this error

Unable to move to the cgi-bin directory "/www/cgibin/" on the FTP server.
The specified directory does not exist or you do not have access to the directory.

Whwn you connect to your webspace using a standard FTP package, what is the folder structure like? Are /acatalog/ and /cgi-bin/ both inside www? Or is /cgi-bin/ on the root with only /acatalog/ inside the /www/ folder?

Both the /cgibin/ and /acatalog/ folders are inside the /www/ one.

I see several differences where you said none exist. Try exporting your V6 settings to a text file (Advanced / Network Setup / Export). Then import them into V8 (Web / Network Setup / Import).

Everything points to the v6 settings being spot on then. As Norman says, an export/import to remove the possibility of a mistyped dot should solve the problem.

I've tried the settings "as is" after v8 had imported and upgraded the v6 site and i've also saved the network settings from v6 and imported them into v8, both with no joy.

Both the sets of settings i've posted above have been tried in v8.

btw I hadn't mentioned it before and i don't know if it will make a difference but there is still a v6 site there. I can't delete or otherwise remove it atm.

All i'm doing though is running the Network Settings test which i'm assuming doesn't bother with any of the exisitng files.

Also it might be worth mentioning that while running through the wizard in v8 it all seems to be detected fine (does it do any test while going through this?) it's just on the test afterwards that it fails.

It may look like I'm not doing anything but at a molecular level I'm really quite busy.

Now that we know what you really want - a separate test area for an alternative V8 site while keeping V6 running - we can help.

Create a new directory (say v8test) in your www folder. Best do this manuallt via an FTP program.

Use the same cgi-bin as before

Use a different SCRIPTID (anything but 1)

Use the known good V6 settings adjusted for this

Better re-upload your v6 site then - in case you have broken the scripts.

Import the v6 settings, switch v8 into test mode - Web | Switch to Test Mode - and upload.

Come back if it does not upload.

I already had done after uploading the v8 shop over it yesterday (i thought i'd cracked the problem after running the wizard succesfully and didn't do a test)

I don't have any problems uploading it.

I've tried both suggestions (test site directory and test mode) and both are giving cgi errors. It's still in test mode atm if you want a look.

                      http://www.globalmapping.uk.com/v8te..._catalog2.html

After trying it yesterday i didn't hold out much hope of either of these working. I don't really want a test site for v8 i just want it to work with network settings that worked with v6. If it can't get through the Tests in the Network settings dialog then i don't think it matters where/how i upload it, it's not going to work.

Any ideas on why the same settings would work on one and not the other?

btw the error it's giving atm is the same as it gave when using it in production mode but in a different directory and the same as I got yesterday when I uploaded it normally.

It may look like I'm not doing anything but at a molecular level I'm really quite busy.

I don't know how you have managed it but it is not in test mode with the v6 settings.

You have the alternate folder solution half implemented.

The reason I went for a straight - import v6 settings, immediately switch to test, immediately upload - is because that produces a known folder setup on the server.

Norman's solution of an alternate folder requires changes to the imported settings - and is therefore more prone to induced error.

I tried Norman's suggestion first, in fact i copied the settings he posted to a file and imported them from there. No joy.

I then imported the v6 settings (keeping the different folder location) put it into test mode and uploaded that.

I don't understand what you mean by half implemented.

What does test mode do? If I upload using the full v6 settings to the same directories etc will it not overwrite the current v6 shop?

Test mode creates an automatic sub level directory structure that allows an operational site to remain on the standard url's while the test site is accessable to the site owner, anyone he gives the test address to, and the knowledgable Actinic software user.

Your v6 brochure homepage will be in domain, your v6 shop in domain/acatalog/, the v8 test will be in domain/acatalog/test/, and the v8 shop in domain/acatalog/test/acatalog/.
