How to put 2 images in a row on the home page

Please help,
I have tried to put 2 images in a row on my home page using the following table :-
!!<<table width="90%" border="0" cellpadding="2"><tr><td><img src="name of file" alt="text to describe image"></td></tr><tr><td><img src="name of file " alt="text to describe image"></td></tr></table>>!!
Our web designer gave it to me but it dosen't seem to work.
Can anyone help as I have little knowledge of tables.
