    V8 Network Setup

I have just received my V8 disks and am going to build totally new sites from scratch for our club for the new year. I am going to try to do with V8 what failed with V7 and that is to run two sites in separate directories on one domain. Yes, I know it should work, but I kept getting problems before.

However, I am getting problems with the network settings. I have used the same configs as V7 except site1 will be /join/acatalog/ instead of /acatalog/.

I ran 'Test' and got the error
Catalog URL appears to be invalid. The file upload to the given 'Path from cg-bin to acatalog directory' cannot be downloaded via the browser on the given Catalog URL. These two access routes don't point to the same destination on the server.
So I ran 'Wizard'. This time the problem was with email verification.
An error occurred while sending an HTTP request to the web server.

    Hi

I think you will need to edit the databse manually and change all references to /acatalog/ to /join/acatalog/

being able to change this to what ever you want is suppose to be on the wish list but still has not been done.

If you make any changes you will need to go back and do the manuall changes all over again, i did it once and gave up after i made a change and crashed my site. I would avoid it to be honest

If V8 is different as i did it on V7 i would like to know

    Cheers
    Darren

If you use the V8 settings for production mode and test mode you will be able to pilfer the settings from there.

Production mode creates network settings for acatalog, test mode puts an extra acatalog/test/acatalog into the mix

they both run from the same cgibin with different script IDs

I just mention this as it may help to point you where you want to be

What database do you refer to, the Network Setup window?

Are you saying that you tried to run two sites on the same domain and it crashed, or that you used a /something/acatalog and not /acatalog/ setup.

        Jo/Darren

I can't see how the path structure will cause the email failure. I ran the Test and Wizard on both my live V7 site and a production V8 site (on same server and domain as V7 site). V7 tests ran OK.

          Bob,

What Darren is saying is that a second site on the same domain, published into a non-standard folder, cannot be managed from Network Settings.

You have to get the site working to where it uploads into the standard /acatalog/ folder, then open ActinicCatalog.mdb in Access and alter all the /acatalog/ path references to /join/acatalog/ . Once you have done that, you cannot open Network Settings again on that site or it will all be reset.

Thanks Bill. I have never seen this mentioned before, I wish I had as it may have solved the problems we had when we ran two sites before. We were getting customers ordering an item in one site and Actinic was looking in the other site for the product html file.

The only problem I have now is that the default location (volvoclub.org.uk/acatalog) is in use by the V7 site, can't I hard code the alternate directories in ActinicCatalog.mdb from the start so I can set up both sites prior to the changeover sometime in the new year?

I even opened a ticket with Actinic, not that they helped much.

There have also been posts here saying that all you need to do to have a second site on the same domain is to put it in a different directory.

I presume the tables to be addited are Setup, Setup1 etc.

Sorry, Bob - I have not actually done this, so cannot be definitive. I am sure the etc. covers it

Do you have the ability to create subdomains within your hosting? Instead of www.volvolclub have join.volvoclub for example. That is where the folders setup could be used. Setting the root of the subdomain to a /join/ folder would allow a website/home page url of join.volvoclub.org.uk and a standard acatalog structure within that. Subdomains would IMHO be easier to configure and maintain.

We have our own server with Clara, although they maintain it for hardware and software updates, so I suspect I can set up subdomains. I have never done this so I will need to read up on it. Yes, that sounds like a better idea.

                Thanks Bill.

                  I notice you use SSL.

if you use sub domains you will need an SSL cert for each subdomain. if you use folders you can use one ssl for both sites

Thanks Jo, I will now put the books down as we don't want to get more SSL certs. So it is back to separate directories off the main site root. I will see how it goes with editing ActinicCatalog.mdb for each site.
