Is there a way to reset a theme back to the original default settings?

Is there a way to reset a theme back to the original default settings?
My Basket and Checkout pages have gone strange - I am using the Smart theme and somewhere (I can't find it) seems to have added an additional </tr> which has pushed the right sidebar to the bottom of the page
also the basket tablenow appears to have ended and part appears alongside instead of within the main table
One problem is they appear correctly in Design View (except Checkout Page 2) but when I upload the test site they go wrong
This is driving me crazy - I know the problem is in the Inner Layout for the sidebar problem because if i remove that i get the right layout, but i cant find which bit of the inner layout upsets it
I would appreciate any help you can give before I spend all of Xmas and New Year tearing my hair out trying to sort this
