    Help!!!!

We have had a website built, for our company, by someone who has now disappeared off the face of the earth!
    Useful!
Everything was built using Actinic software, for the Shooping Cart, I found out.
With my basic knowledge of web design I have found out where the mistakes are that I need to rectify.
I have Dreamweaver and can modify Dreamweaver pages, no problems.
I have 'mistake' in two files that are '*.cat' files.
When I open these through Dreamweaver and edit them, then download them, I get an "Incorrect Signature" error.

    How do I overcome this?
I don't own Actinic software myself as I am not a web designer.
    Can anyone help?

You can not edit the cat files. Cat files are generated by the software each time you upload actinic.

What change are you trying to make?

There is no price allocated to one item. So I tried to edit the code to add the price.
The second problem is that he had missed out some other 'options' on our goods, again I tried to edit the code.

We sell gift cards, and some cards have choices of text, these are some of what is missing.

All product detail has to be entered via actinic software. After you have made the changes you then upload the changes to the server.

I don't own Actinic software myself as I am not a web designer.
        how do you download orders?

Thanks, I can see that now.
Are there any ways around this?
I don not want to buy £300-£400 worth of software to make these small changes. I did download the free trial software, but then did not look at it in the 30 day trial period, really clever!
Would I be able to edit this sort of thing from the trial software?
Do you know anyone who could edit these things, for a small fee?

you will have to have your own licenced copy of the software to make changes.

I would call Actinic after the break, if your designer bought a copy of actinic there will be a record of this.

However I still don't understand how you can download orders if you don't have a copy of the software

Each site needs a registered copy of Actinic to make it function and for the license agreement - your previous developer will have purchased a copy for you and used it to create the site - you can use the serial number in the download trial copy to activate the product to a full version

Hopefully it's not the old con-trick of simply sending a receipt email to a 3rd party - designers should be shot for doing that

On our site you enter the qty's of each type of card, then the customer fills in their details.
We then receive an email with all of the cards and qty's and a contact phone number, in text file format.
We then call our customer for payment.
We do not use Actinic in any other way. I only discovered what the designer had done by learning a bit myself then downloaded the site!

This is in contravention of the license agreement - you will probably need to speak to Actinic in the New Year to not only try and recover your license number so you can maintain your own site but also name and shame the developer.

Yep - it is easy money for a designer as they do not have to figure the cost of the software into the quotation. Grrrrr.

Stewart - if you want to email me (even Jo and Malcolm) the name of the designer we may know something as have been around long enough to know most of the Actinicers
