Some filenames conflict - last ditch solution

After getting that "Some filenames conflict" message when uploading a site, and having searched everywhere that I could think of (Library - right click find), manual checks through fragments etc), and even querying the Access database directly... I resorted to the following - which solved the problem:

1. set up a new 'vanilla' site
2. copy into the new site:
- the Access database
- site graphics

I guess any special css files may also be needed (unless Actinic gets these via any Dreamweaver template).

I tried this solution and actinic just crashes every time I try to do an offline preview...

Are there any other, less drastic, solutions to this annoying problem?

the error I'm getting is :

Some filenames conflict. All files being sent to the web site must have unique names. Please check the list of files in Advanced | Additional Files.

Some of the following files must be renamed before an upload can occur. Once the files are renamed, reselect them in the Actinic.

D:\Program Files\Actinic\Sites\DYMO\logo.gif
D:\Program Files\Actinic\Sites\DYMO\working\logo.gif

Neither of the files is called by 'additional files'; I've also done an explorer search of the contents of every single html file in that directory - there is not one single html file that contains the text "working". That logo file was only ever called from the 4 primary template files, so I've no idea where it's remembering the working directory from.

How else can I find it?

how can it be? I've done a text search on every html file in the whole directory and none contain the 'working' directory.

But you've just caught me in the middle of a possible solution...

I have just found the duplicate file in the filelist table in the access DB though - "ahah" I thought, "I'll just untick transfer status that should do the trick!". Except it seems to have reticked itself. SO then I deleted it and tried again, but it seems to have undeleted itself!!!

I'll give it another go, there's got to be a way to kill it off from the table - "DIE &$&*£@$ DIE!!!"

I delete it and it undeletes itself (even after warning me that if I deleted it would be permanent and couldn't be undone!)

If I rename it, it stays renamed, but I still get the error message when I try to upload - but neither have got the new name.

So as well as remembering this duplicate name in filelist it also seems to be remembering somewhere else, and using that to refresh the filelist table if I dare to change it!

I've expanded the text search to every single file (not just html) in the site directory - still nothing. Also checked the entire registry just in case - still nothing.

Does anyone know how to do a globale text search in access...? It must be in there somewhere - there's nowhere else it could be hiding...

just found it in the access DB in the setup table - it was set as the corporate logo!!!

Handy hint actinic programmers - next time there's a conflict between something and you're writing the error message, don't say "hey dude there's a conflict somewhere", say where the heck the 2 conflicting things are!! "you are calling this file from xxx template and you are also calling from the corporate logo setting in design/options". How difficult would that be???

In just 1 hour I managed to redesign the look of my entire site but then spent longer than that just trying to upload the b@$£&* because of this stupid error.

I fully agree with John's frustration.

An "an error has ocurred" type message is useless if it contains no useful information about what to do to fix it.

I agree with that too. We are working on improving the error messages Actinic throws up. I will pass this onto the development team.

Maybe you could add a 4/5 digit error code as well as the message - it would make it easier to search for posts on the forum of people who had the error before.

And don't be afraid of too much information, most of us are quite technical! (as long as it's not a page of hex!)

It's just annoying sometimes when you get held up for ages with some stupid little problem...

Numeric error code is a great idea.

Assuming this code and the message were in the database (and helpfile) it would allow errors from sites in other languages to be understood.

I find the easiest way to find the conflicting filenames is to do an export of the content (File > Export) and then open that spreadsheet and search for the filename of which you can see what 2 products the filename is used with. I often find it'll be something like product popups or custom properties where the duplicate has been set.

However this only works well where there are a few conflicting filenames to find. If there are lots then it's a time consuming process.

I think rather than Actinic warning you on upload that there are conflicting filenames and not telling you where, it shouldn't allow you to enter duplicate filenames in the first place as it uploads everything to the same folder. It could give you a warning when you set up an individual product that the filename exists and to rename it, or similarly list the issues when doing a spreadsheet import. Many an hour has been lost trying to locate these errors.

Having conflicting file names in products is one thing, but when Actinic manages to create duplicates and then replaces the file path with ... in the error message, that is when you know your in for a long night.

My issue was with actiniccore.js & actinicextras.js which had some how been duplicated into a none existant folder in the PreviewHTML folder not hidden and no searches turned it up.

only solution, take a snapshop to a remote drive and del all the files in PreviewHTML, SiteHTML and DesignPreviewHTML with Actinic closed. It worked but the problem has arisen again once and the same solution worked again. Thing is, it dont happen every time i do a site refresh or upload, just occasionally.

Hope that helps someone to sort their problem out.
