contact us not working - smtp server error

    Hi everyone.
I find this one a bit strange but hopefully someone can point my in the right area.
I have uploaded my live site to http:\\www.performance-oils.co.uk but when I click on Contact Us then the email link to be taken to the contact form it will not send.

    The error received is
Error returned from SMTP server (4: : Sender address rejected: not owned by user sales@performance-oils.co.uk )
Please wait for your browser to forward you to the next page or click here.

However if I put my email i.e. sales@performance-oils.co.uk into the email box in the form it works fine??

I have checked the ftp server settings in the network settings, these look fine, test fine and I get the test email through no problem. I also have gone in to Design > Library >> Layouts >> Web Page Inner Layout and reset the Contact Us Bulk Area to be factory settings.

The really strange thing is that it works fine on my test site http:\\www.the-broch.co.uk and this is the exact same hosting package as my live, but uses a different username, password and domain.

Any ideas what I am most likely obviously missing here?
    Thanks in advance!

    Rona,

This is an issue with your Hosting, your SMTP server does not allow relay to external domains at the moment, hence you are only able to send email to an xxxx@performance-oils.co.uk address alone. Have a word with them and they should be able to fix it for you.

    Kind regards,

Thanks for your reply, but I dont think this is the problem.

Both my website are hosted in the same place and have mirrored permissions and settings and it works fine on my test domain.

There is also no problem in getting the emails when an order is placed both to ourselves and the copy email to the customer are sent with no problems.

This problem only seemed to start after I tried to change the form to include additional fields, although I followed the procedure from the manual. I'm sure i'm just missing something obvious.

Another strange thing was that I could get it to work on occassion by repeatingly hitting the refresh key when the form was open before sending it.

The only difference between the two sites is that the test site takes you stratight to the form on clicking the top bar navigation link and the live site has an intermittent page with contact details on it.
      Thanks in advance!

Why not reset the form and the Perl MailForm.pl script to the factory defaults and see if that fixes things.

You do this via Design / Library / Layouts / Web Page Inner Layout / Contact Us Bulk Area. Right-click it and choose "Revert To factory Settings". The original of MailForm.pl is in C:\Program Files\Actinic v8\Original.

          Thanks Norman,
But I'm afraid I've already tried that to no avail. :-(
          Thanks in advance!

Have you asked your host to check they had enabled mail relay on your mail account

What do you have as the SMTP server address and are you enabling or using the username and password option on that?

If you are, and on the other domain it works, then check your control panel for the domain it does not work in and see if you need to enable SMTP auto relaying for that username and password combination, or try using localhost without any username or password, to see if the server will accept local smtp connections (as a trusted user on the server) which will then pass it to the mail transport agent for sending out.

Yes I have checked with my ISP and there is no problems that end, they assume there is a problem within the script itself.

I have the smtp server set up as advised by my ISP, and the username and password are both enabled.
                Thanks in advance!

Dont think the script being incorrect is the way to proceed with this, as if that were the case, then it means you have amended the script (which assume is not the case right), which would only leave it was incorrect all of the time, which means everyones would not work - which is not the case.

                  So.....

You mention ISP - so, is the service you use for your actual Internet connection the same as you use for your hosting of this issue domain?

Did you try localhost without any username or password authentication enabled?

Yes by ISP I also mean my domain host.

I have tried the localhost but this did not work. My host has advised that a username and password are always required.

I have amended the script, as I previsouly said I added additional text entry boxes and amended the mailform.pl as per the manual. Then generated scripts and copies up the new mf000000.pl file

This is one of those weird ones that cant be explained I think. I will just go back to one of my backups from before and re-do all the product changes etc which have happened since then.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me on this one.
                    Thanks in advance!
