Global change of custom variable

Hi, i have a custom variable on 400 products. Is there a way to update all 400 products as I need to alter the text in the variable.
I have been to library/variables/ edit the variable and changed the initial value and top level value but actinic does not update.

Could you export a hierarchical text file into excel, change the variable and then re-import into Actinic?
