    VAT exempt Customers

    Hi,

I have a quick question - I have a customer who wants to set up an e-commerce system for his mobility products.
The problem is some products are VAT free for qualifying customers.
Can I set up a system to allow for this.

E.g. have a check box for people who have VAT exemption - but only on certain products.

Or could this be done by having user accounts?

    Or any other ideas!!

    Many thanks

    Dan

    Hi,

I'm afraid that the VAT exemption is site wide and can't be set for specific products or customer accounts. It is set in the 'Settings | Business Settings | Tax' window and appears on the invoice address page in the checkout. I will add it to the wish-list for you.

Its a bit convoluted, but you could set up a new location (country), applicable to your specific VAt free customers:

      UK (tax exempt customers)

and set this country to be VAT exempt.

If you use this as a starting point, and add a bit of lateral thinking, it may be possible to devise a workable (if far from perfect) workaround.

The problem would be ensuring that non qualifying customers don't use this option too.

I have not tried this myself, as we use simple tax, so its an idea that would need thorough testing.

        Thanks

Hi Thanks for the suggestion - Is this something I could do with registered users in business?

I guess what Martin was suggesting is that if you set up a country called "UK - Mobility products only" and allowed VAT exemption with a disability code or something needed (instead of the VAT number) then you could limit this to certain products by product weight. i.e. setting non-mobility products to have a high weight and then only allowing lighter weight products to be shipped in the shipping table.

          Mike

NB: Using this method, customers would have to place a separate order for the VAT free mobility products, but it would at least allow them to do it.

Thats exactly what I had in mind Mike.
I think it would work, but would not be foolproof.
Can't comment on use with registered user accounts - have never used them

Expensive option, but run two sites with the common home page asking for the disability number and directing to the second site, whilst if you dont have the number you get directed to the first site

Might need to play with the sites to over come any SEO problems but probably only to rearange section order and change product descriptions to say the same thing but in a different manner

                Hi,

Any idea if this prob. has been adressed in V8.5?

                Cheers

There are no changes to VAT in v8.5.

just a quick question on VAT emptions - is the VAT charge based on the invoice or delivery address?

So if someone in Ireland with a valid VAT number (ie. exempt) orders something to be delivered to Northern Ireland (no VAT exemption) do they pay VAT or not?

I notice actinic has the option of taxing by delivery or invoice address, but not sure which one to choose...?

not sure that answers my question, or at least not in a way I understand it(!). But I've asked for clarification on that thread.

It seems pretty clear to me.

The basis on which you need to charge VAT is all about the movement of the goods not who is paying for it.
i.e. VAT exemption for businesses can only apply if the goods are exported out of the UK. If they aren't exported from the UK then there's no VAT exemption.

(in terms of your question. It's the delivery address that counts)

                              Would this work.........

Go into Business Settings and select the Tax Tab.
Set up a UK Tax Zone
Under 'Taxes Levied in UK Tax Zone' - tick the 'Allow Exemption' box
Type message in the 'Prompt' and 'Message' boxes.

On our site we use this to exempt VAT for Channel Island customers.
