    NEW Website ReelFishing

Got fed up with the old website using the smart theme, everyone seems to be using it, so i have upgraded to v8 and now have a new look, if anyone can give me comments on our new site, i would appreciate it, i like to have a second opinion please.

    Thank you in advance

    Another nice design from boxhedge.

The colours remind me a bit of another angling site. I thought it was sportfish but they certainly don't look like that now.

    Nice design, should do well.

    Mike

PS. I'm not sure I like the way the menu's collapse every time you get to new page, but that's probably just me nitpicking.

The section page refreshes when viewing the pop-up page - check the onload statement.

Thank you guys for your comments.

Im seeing several 404 errors on some odd file names eg http://www.reelfishing.co.uk/____spa...ro_XTE-_A.html

Looks like the file name has had some styling applied to it???

There are also link to some webstats pages

How did you avoid showing the 'acatalog' folder in the URL ?

yes i am aware of some of the links going to old pages on searches i am still working on this, it all takes time. As for the odd file name, in v.8 when you add description to the sub sections you can apply bold or colours to your text well the coding you highlighted is the result!!!

To be honest boxhedge was the pro in that department you would have to ask them, as far as i know you get rid of the acatalog folder which you can do through microsoft access then with your network settings you set it to the root instead of the acatalog folder. But please don't take my word for it, i'm still learning with actinic software.

There is a thread on this from last year which tells you how to do it - so a search should find it.

This is very odd and in theory should not happen - I would check it out properly as Ive not seen it happening on any other V8 sites. It is producing a very long url which could be seen as SPAM by Google.

                      Thanks for the constructive comments

All comments welcome guys, Melanie's just let me know that she's asked for comments on the forum so I thought I'd take a look.

A lot of the problems pointed out are going to take time to filter through the search engines no doubt but unfortuneately during the period of the new site going live and the old ewenny angling site linking through to it we had a number of changes made which haven't helped (some forced upon us and some of our own making).

RuralWeb - There are also link to some webstats pages
This is due to a server reelfishing was due to go live on which we later found to be unsuitable for the job. Once the server provider came clean reelfishing made the decision to move to a new provider. The link to /webstats is the result of the search engines picking this up in the short time the site was being tested on the old server (though there was never any link to it from the site). I'll add reference to it on the new servers robots.txt to ignore it, though it doesn't exist. It also links to why so many of googles cached pages look a mess as it has stored pages which were loaded whilst we were racking our brains as to why we were having problems uploading (later to find out we just had to mover servers).

The odd and ridicously long files names (which is rightly pointed out won't be looked upon kindly by search engines) are a inherited problem. I think caused when mel was running the ewenny site without fully understanding how she could control the file name within actinic. So no styling just poor houskeeping.
As for the 404's this is due to Mel changing the file name within the reelfishing site (now she knows she can shorten the name) but not changing reference to filename in the .htaccess 301 redirect, which she knows she needs to get on top of (again we all know how search engines don't like 404's).

I actually agree I might talk to Melanie about trying to do something about this as I now think the site would benefit from a tweak to this aspect of the design.

I'll look into this and see what can be done.

                      Thanks all for the comments.
Anymore comments appreciated (I'm sure more by Mel).

On a slightly different subject. I must say that despite the bugs and the move away from using standard web editors, I have turned into a bit of a fan of v8 since doing the reelfishing site (cursed it before). Many of the little touches on the site (litlle icons appearing over main images to signify new or sale items + selectable fragment backgrounds and prices on section pages) couldn't have been achieved that easily without it or the use of variables. So for once I thought it would be refreshing to here some singing the praises for the move.

Anyway that's my little speech, look forward to more comments,
                      Regards

p.s I think this thread should be moved to the "any other business" section but hey I won't complain.

The sea fishing multiplier page has double pound signs on the prices e.g. OUR PRICE ££95

One for the guys at reelfishing.co.uk.

Set up a custom field so they could easily display prices on section pages but they don't need to add the £ sign when they input it,

                          cheers

onload is missing from the page causing the page to jump back to the top when popups are viewed. This is a 804 bug fixed in 805

Cheers Malcom will get reelfishing to update to new version (in any case popups for some reason aren't taking on styling as I'd wish so will look into this asap)
